History
Elegance was once a 14th century portrait, though the details regarding whoever painted it have long been lost to time. The artist, despite fully completing it, deemed it "inferior" to their prior works and placed it in storage. Long after the artist passed on, the piece was still never found or showed off properly. After about 300 years of being left behind in a long-forgotten and abandoned attic, the paint on Elegance gradually melted into red and black hues as it started to gain a mind of its own, eventually consuming the portrait and fully obfuscating whatever the original painting once was. Vengeful towards its creator but well aware that they are long gone, Elegance has decided to direct its anger towards other humans instead. It sneaks from gallery to gallery, trying to be seen by as many eyes as possible.
General information
Physical appearance
The only "consistent" part of Elegance's appearance is its portrait "head", as it can change the rest of its body at will. The portrait bears the text "ELEGANCE", which is the only remnant of whatever the original portrait used to be. Elegance cannot alter the form of its portrait, though the rest of its body has a slimelike consistency that it can physically alter at will. Elegance's face is always locked into a smile, regardless of its current mood. Its eyes (which glow in the dark) and mouth narrow when it spots prey. Elegance can be up to 20 feet tall, though it prefers to stay at around 10 feet as the body is easier to hold together (and less conspicuous).
Although Elegance is genderless, it frequently prefers to take on an exaggerated and feminine form. This form is the form it is most often seen in. In this feminine form, two smaller portraits make up Elegance's arms. Despite looking like its head, these two portraits are fully made of paint. It is not fully known why they are able to levitate independently from the rest of its body.
Regardless of whatever form it takes, its body subtly oozes and drips paint.
Whenever Elegance sneaks itself into a gallery, it assumes a form where its face is fully hidden, pretending to be fully inert.
Personality and traits
Elegance is a simple-minded creature, with most of its motivations revolving around identifying prey that it can turn into fine art. While it often prefers to go for people who do not "respect" it, it will also take the opportunity to attack anyone else (including night guards and those unlucky enough to be alone in the room).
Occasionally, Elegance will choose a prey to "hunt" for later, usually in cases where there are too many witnesses around for it to safely go after. Once it has chosen someone to be its prey, it will always inevitably catch them whenever it is most convenient.
Despite Elegance's monstrous nature, it genuinely enjoys being creative with its victims. It is known to transform them into a variety of forms, such as statues, portraits, pottery, sculptures, and several other art forms. It often prefers shapes and objects that preserve the rough form that the victim had when they were still human.
Abilities
Much of Elegance's abilities stem from the paintlike "goop" that constantly oozes from its body. This paint should never be touched, as even a drop can quickly spread across the surface of the victim's entire body. Once it has, it will painlessly reshape them and quickly evaporate, leaving only an art piece behind. The art piece visually resembles the original victim, and their sentience is maintained in the process. Elegance's abilities do not kill the victim, though they remain transformed into artwork. Despite Elegance's history of being an abandoned art piece, it likes to sneak its creations into art galleries so that other people can admire them.
In cases where someone touches Elegance when there are too many witnesses (like touching its canvas, which is always wet with paint), they will simply be "marked" for later. The effects will simply kick in later whenever no one can see it. Even if the paint is washed off before then, the victim is still marked, and will transform later regardless. Elegance does not need to be physically present in these cases.
If Elegance needs to quickly transform someone on the spot, it can quickly slam its face down over someone before immediately "spitting" out a finished piece.
Despite Elegance's monstrous nature, it genuinely enjoys being creative with its victims. It is known to transform them into a variety of forms, such as statues, portraits, pottery, sculptures, plushies, dolls, puppets, and several other art forms. It often prefers shapes and objects that preserve the rough form that the victim had when they were still human. It is also known to experiment with its style sometimes, occasionally being inspired by other works in whatever gallery it had taken up residence in at the time. Its victims do not have the same contagious touch that Elegance has.
While Elegance cannot speak words (instead making incoherent vocalizations), it is able to write in a limited capacity. It somehow has the innate ability to identify the names of its victims, often including their name somewhere on the artwork. It does not sign its art pieces.
Elegance can briefly dissolve its entire body (including its head) into a puddle, and can use this to ooze through the smallest of cracks and crevices. This is often how it sneaks in, though the portrait part of it can also levitate. It can also utilize the element of surprise to pull people into the puddle by using its arms, spitting out an art piece shortly afterwards.
Relationships
Creator
Elegance loathes its creator, though it is intelligent enough to know that they are no longer alive. Its creator led a fairly solitary life and never had any family. Elegance's creative streak likely comes from its creator's influence.
Humans
Elegance looks at any and all humans with the same amount of contempt. It will not hunt down every single person who views it, but this is mostly for logistical reasons (some galleries are jam-packed and it would like to maintain a low profile, as much as it would like to catch everyone). Elegance is intelligent enough to hide its powers from the public, and has been skilled at never revealing its true abilities to the general public. Several urban legends have been associated with the disappearances that Elegance often causes.
Elegance has never been caught, and is rather skilled at dispatching any witnesses.
Trivia
- Elegance was originally meant to be a mirror instead of a painting. I still plan to reuse the "mirror monster" concept for a separate character.
- Elegance sounds near-identical to the Purple Punchers from Luigi's Mansion.
- The dot on the corner of its mouth is meant to resemble a beauty mark.
- Its earlier design didn't have any arms.
- The font for the nameplate is Cambria Bold.
